Simple Swaps July 2021

If you'd ordered one of our July Simple Swaps Boxes and can't wait to find out what's inside, read on. It's a good one. Don't I say that every month? Well it's true. It still amazes me how many simple things we can do to help the Earth.

So, here we go.....

Swap This (most supermarket brand laundry detergent)

Unlike most regular supermarket brands, Dirt Laundry detergent is formulated with 100% pure and powerful plant-based and biodegradable ingredients.
It comes in sustainable, refillable packaging that you can return to them for free, so you're a step closer to a zero waste laundry.

If you’ve ordered one of our Essentials boxes this month you will receive one of the refill packs. You can reuse any bottle or pump pack you have at home and measure out 40mls of detergent per load so it should last around 30 washes. Deluxe Box subscribers will also receive the Dirt Company brand pump bottle. This bottle is made of glass with a silicon casing for some protection. These can be refilled over and over again and 4 pumps should deliver the correct amount.

These woollen dryer balls from Activated Eco reduce drying time in your clothes dryer by approx. 20% which is going to save you time, energy and $ on your power bill. They also help reduce static which is great especially at this time of year when we’re all washing our warm and woollies. And the best news is, each one will last up to 1000 loads in the dryer.

With that, instead of using traditional dryer sheets containing synthetic fragrances with unknown ingredients, a couple of drops of essential oil on the dryer ball will leave your clothes smelling amazing. We’ve included Perfect Potion’s Lemon Scented Eucalyptus for a nice clean fresh scent, but you could use any essential oil you love.

Plastic pegs are terrible for the environment for obvious reasons, they don’t break down but they do become brittle in the sun and are constantly having to be replaced.
Even wooden pegs don’t’ stand the test of time. Enter these stainless steel pegs from Activated Eco. Made from marine grade 316 stainless steel, these pegs neither rust or corrode in the face of all possible environments and weather conditions. On top of that, the size of their wire material (5.8 cm long and 1.7 mm wire) empowers them to repel the heat of the sun. So, you won’t you suffer from burnt hands and fingers.

Most peg holders on the market are made of plastic which

  • Is terrible for the environment and
  • Doesn’t last long when exposed to the elements.

We’ve included these great bags as an alternative. A very simple swap indeed however one that will save a lot of plastic. The bags will still need to be kept out of the elements to extend their life however because they don’t contain any plastic and are made of natural fibres they can be composted at the end of their life.

Lastly, if you are an existing subscriber of our Deluxe Box, this month you would have received a little extra.

Our final swap this month is:

Swap This

For This

We’ve included a delicates wash bag for your laundry. These were custom made for us by a local lady who loves to sew. They have a handy tie instead of a zip. I don’t know about you, but I’ve thrown away countless wash bags over the years because of a broken zip. Not to mention most that I’ve come across are made of fabric that contains plastic which as we all know is harmful to the environment and just the act of washing can release micro plastics into our waterways. I also love that while the cotton fabric is thin enough that the garments inside will get a good wash, they are not made of mesh which can be problematic when things poke through the holes (bra wires anyone?!)

That’s it from us for this month. We hope you love your Simple Swaps and we can’t wait to share more with you soon.
